MONDAY MUSE: MADELEINE SPENCER

When I see someone and they are beautiful, it is about their aura & what they are projecting. That to me is the most beautiful and striking thing....

As a female founded brand, BELLA's mission is to celebrate our female trailblazers to empower and inspire you along your journey. That’s why we’ve started our Monday Muse series. Each Monday, to start your week on a high, we will highlight one woman who’s paving the way in their own field and in life. Here, they’ll answer questions on everything, from how they started out to challenges and highlights, plus beauty advice they think everyone should know, along with their favourite top trick. What's better is that you can ask them anything via the comment section below!

This week: Madeleine Spencer, MUA, Journalist & Broadcaster! Instagram -  @madeleinelovesthis

Tell us about yourself

My name is Madeleine Spencer, and I am a journalist, consultant, broadcaster, and makeup artist.

Show us your best beauty hack.

To always add brown eyeliner, even if it’s just on the outer corner of the eye. It just gives a shadow that makes your eyes look that much wider.

What is your best beauty advice?

My philosophy is to find the thing you like about yourself and the thing that makes you feel beautiful and play with that and enjoy it. Life is too short to be bogged down with what’s wrong so just find joy in the good parts.

What is your go-to makeup look?

Perfected skin, bronzed eyes, lots of mascara and a nude lip.

" I have had to accept I’ll never be perfect - and that that’s okay "

Madeleine Spencer, MUA

How do look after your mental health?

In many, small ways. A lot of them are sewn into my routine! Things like doing a stretch in the morning, not drinking too much alcohol, journaling & eating things that will keep my blood pressure steady and thus keep my anxiety less pronounced. I think I do lots of little things that take the sting out of stress.

What motto do you live by?

Find pleasure in the small things. Whatever I am doing, I can find something to be happy and excited about.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

My parents – they are hardworking, kind, and have never let age or circumstance stop them from trying.

What has been the highlight of your journey?

It has definitely been the people I have met. There are so many passionate, larger than life people who just fill this tapestry of life with interest. I feel very fortunate to have seen this so closely.

What is something that people would be surprised to know about you?

For a long time, I was obsessed with Victorians and the way they looked and tried to mimic that through very specific makeup and beauty techniques.

What insecurities have you overcome and how?

I’ve partially overcome my concerns about my many shortfalls by seeing other equally as flawed people achieve things. I have had to accept I’ll never be perfect - and that that’s okay.

What is one thing you would change in the beauty industry?

The obsession with new things. I like going back both in technique and in products and in the look overall. It would be nice if the focus isn’t always on what is around the corner but rather, how we are working with the art and rich history of before and then reinterpreting and reimagining it.

What is 'beauty' to you?

It is about character, personality, imagination and intelligence all shining out of someone. To me, when I see someone and they are beautiful, it is about their aura and what they are projecting. That to me is the most beautiful and striking thing.

What advice would you give to yourself if you were starting all over again?

To really go for it, without concern about what people thought or whether you’d be laughed at.

You can invite any 3 people to dinner, who has made the guest list and why?

I have a group of friends I adore, and I’d have any three of them, any time. But if picking celebrities: Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, and Miriam Margolyes. I like good conversation and people with a robust sense of humour.

What are you manifesting for 2023?

Nothing. I’m so over the idea of manifesting - I just want to see where life is going to take me, while I do my best at work and at home.
